North Seattle is experiencing a severe spike in drug overdoses. It’s important that our family members and neighbors get the help they desperately need.
On January 17, 2019, northern Seattle saw more drug overdoses in one day than it had on any previous day in history. Within a matter of hours, 7 residents of Interbay and surrounding neighborhoods reported to local hospitals for overdoses.
King County health officials attribute the spike to a bad batch of fentanyl circulating through the area. But, many see it as representative of where Seattle’s larger drug problem may be headed.
In this article, we’ll outline just some of the resources available to local addicts. Hopefully, this will help to connect addicts with the help they need.
Are you struggling with a drug habit or drinking problem? Learn how to get help on our drug rehab and alcohol rehab pages.
There are several drug detox centers in the Interbay neighborhood of Seattle. These facilities help addicts to get drugs out of their system. Once an addict has expelled all of the chemicals from their body, they are able to move forward with their recovery.
Many addicts try to quit cold turkey and detox on their own. This works for some people. However, many people find that they’re unable to quit without professional help.
In a medical detox program, addicts go through withdrawals under the supervision of doctors. These doctors help to ease their withdrawal symptoms and ensure their safety throughout the process.
Overall, it’s a much safer and more comfortable way to detox. The facilities around Interbay are great resources for people who want to get sober.
Many insurance providers pay for detox. Click here to find out if your provider covers the cost of addiction treatment.
Interbay’s rehab facilities provide therapy and counseling for newly sober people. These treatment centers teach recovered addicts how to transition from life as an addict to one as a productive, drug-free person.
Sobriety isn't always easy. Particularly in the early days, newly recovered addicts are plagued with stress, triggers, and constant cravings. Rehab gives them the tools they need to manage these things.
In rehab, addicts attend individual therapy sessions and group support meetings. These resources help them to understand themselves and their habits. They also help them to develop techniques for fighting off the urge to use drugs or alcohol in the future.
There are many different types of rehab. Some programs are inpatient-based. Others are outpatient-based. The Seattle area offers rehab programs for every different type of addict.

Northpoint Washington is located in Edmonds, just a 30-minute drive from Interbay.
Alcoholics Anonymous, commonly known as “AA”, is a support group that helps people overcome alcohol addiction. It does so by facilitating free support meetings in towns and cities all over the world.
Typically, these meetings take place in churches, town halls, school cafeterias, and other public facilities. Most meetings are open to everyone including non-members.
In the meetings, people come together to talk about how alcoholism impacted their life. Some attendees are newly sober while others have been sober for decades. Members belong to every race, creed, and economic class imaginable. The organization does not privilege any one type of person over another. They simply want to help each other get sober.
AA is famously organized around the Twelve Steps. The Steps are a system that AA’s founder invented in 1935. They are designed to help addicts overcome negative behaviors.
There are a number of meetings around Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood. If you or a loved one struggles with an alcohol abuse habit, it might benefit you to check one out.

Narcotics Anonymous is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous. However, this group is designed for people who use drugs other than alcohol. These drugs include (but are definitely not limited to): cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, prescription drugs, marijuana, and others.
Basically, if there’s a drug that someone abuses, NA will try to help them quit. The organization does not privilege any type of addict over another. Their goal is simply to help people overcome drug addiction and move forward toward a better life.
Like AA, NA holds free, daily meetings all over the world. These meetings are open to anyone who is willing to admit that they have a problem.
Human connection is vital for recovering addicts. Addicts benefit from spending time with others who’ve lived through the same situations. NA meetings provide an opportunity for addicts to meet and connect with individuals who understand what they’ve been through.
There are several NA meetings in the Interbay area of Seattle. And, there are even more in surrounding neighborhoods. Any local addict who wants to get clean should give it a try.

SMART Recovery is one of the most popular alternatives to AA and NA. It offers the same type of group support as Anonymous programs, but it differs in a few key ways.
One of the main differences is that SMART Recovery does not use the Twelve Steps. Instead, they use a four-point program that approaches addiction from a scientific perspective. Essentially, this program helps addicts rewire their brains through stress management techniques.
Although AA and NA help countless addicts to overcome their addictions, they don’t work for everyone. Some people, for example, are turned off by the spiritual undertones of the Twelve Steps. Because the Steps ask for members to find a “higher power”, many people consider AA and NA religious organizations.
So, if you’ve tried using the Twelve Steps but found that they didn’t work, this could be a great resource for you. There are several local meetings that take place each week.

Al-Anon is a support group for the people who happen to love an addicted person. It’s open to family members like spouses, parents, and children as well as friends.
Loving an addict is not easy. It hurts to watch them ruin their lives with drugs and alcohol. But, it’s important that family members realize that this condition is out of their control.
In Al-Anon meetings, family members and friends gather to talk about their feelings. They open up about their guilt, shame, embarrassment, anger, and depression. They listen to each other’s stories and offer advice. They bond around the shared experience of loving someone with a substance abuse problem.
Some members have lost family members to addiction. Others are worried about losing their family members. Whatever the circumstances, this is a great opportunity for people to reach out and get the support they need.

Alateen is an organization designed for the children of addicts. It’s essentially like Al-Anon but caters to the specific needs of kids.
Young people with addicted parents are in dire need of support. They need a place to vent about their overwhelming feelings. They need to know that they aren’t alone in their situation. And, most importantly, they need to understand that their parent’s condition is not their fault.
Alateen offers all of these things and more. Each week, the organization facilitates meetings in Interbay and other Seattle neighborhoods. All meetings are moderated by an addiction specialist who is trained to help children cope with their situation.
If you know a young person whose life has been impacted by someone’s addiction, you may want to bring them to a meeting.
