When you have a family member who struggles with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, you constantly feel as though you wish you could do something. You'd love to help make a change in the life of your loved one, but you feel stuck. Unfortunately, so many people don't realize that there is help for families who have a family member either battling an addiction or in recovery.
Al Anon is an organization that offers support groups for families who have loved ones who are either in need of recovery from addictions, or currently in recovery. People often need so much more help than they realize, and Al-Anon gives them a place to connect with others who understand their struggles.
Alateen meetings are similar to Allanon meetings in that they offer help and support to families. However, Alateen meetings are centered around teenagers and children. This particular age group often needs a different type of help when they have loved ones with addictions, and Alateen provides it for them. It gives them a safe place to share about how they feel and find the support they need.
When you go to Al-Anon, 12 Steps will be read out loud. This is helpful for you to understand the way that recovery works for your loved one. You'll be able to take the time to share with others about your experiences, but if you don't feel like sharing, you can simply pass. You may find that others are quick to recommend Al Anon literature that has helped them to cope with their family members' addictions, and everyone is there to help each other.
