Al-Anon: Offering Help to the Struggling Families of Addicts
Families often struggle the most when someone they love is a drug addict or alcoholic. They usually feel alone in those struggles, and they believe they have no one to turn to for help. Al-Anon fits that need.

Alateen: Providing Support for Teens, Older Children and Young Adults

Advice for Families: What You Need to Know About Alcohol Poisoning and Drug Overdose
If you have an addicted loved one, an overdose can happen at any time. They typically occur when someone has either used too much, or attempted to quit and relapsed.
This is an emergency situation, and it is very important that you know how to identify an overdose.
Alcohol poisoning requires immediate medical attention. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Passing out and becoming unresponsive
- Irregular and slow breathing
- Seizures
- Nausea and vomiting
- Severe confusion
- Blue or pale skin
- Hypothermia (low body temperature)
Likewise, a drug overdose of any kind requires immediate medical attention. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Hallucinations
- Seizures
- Blue or pale skin
- Loss of balance and coordination
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Extreme confusion
- Breathing problems
- Stomach cramps
If you believe that a loved one has overdosed, taking the right steps is important. Do not attempt to get them to the hospital yourself. Call 911 right away. You should stay with them until help arrives, and be prepared to provide any essential information that the paramedics may need.
Even if you are unsure about the overdose, call anyway. Your quick action may just save your friend or family member’s life.
