They can choose to participate in community or county programs, attend AA or NA or get treatment at a private facility. But not everyone knows the best place to start looking for the services they need.
At Northpoint Washington, we offer mental health and addiction recovery treatment services. But we know that our program is not right for everyone. We wanted to do our part to inform people about the resources that are available for them locally in Anacortes.
If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction of any kind, there are resources available to help. It is important to know all of your options for recovery so you can make the best decision for yourself. Here, we will go over the major steps on the road to recovery and what local resources are available to you here in Anacortes, Washington.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse:
Detoxification is the process of allowing the body to rid itself of a drug while managing the symptoms of withdrawal. Detox alone is not treatment, but is often the first step in a drug treatment program. Treatment with behavioral therapy and/or a medication (if available) should follow detox.
Detox is the first step to recovery because it allows your body time to heal itself from the damaging effects of the addictive substance. Without a period of detox, the substance will remain in your system and your body will continue to crave it.
When going through detox, your body will experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. This is why it is recommended to find a detox treatment that is medically supervised for your own safety, and also to help reduce the severity of your symptoms.
As stated in the detox definition, detox alone is not a treatment for substance abuse or alcoholism. Even if your body is completely rid of all addictive substances and you stop experiencing withdrawals, you need to address the mental side of your addiction.
Finding a rehab treatment that works for you is important because it will give you the time, space, and tools you need to mentally recover from addiction to any toxic substance.
There are two different kinds of rehab facilities: inpatient and outpatient. Both are good treatment options for addicts, but they each have their own pros and cons. It is important to understand those difference to know which is right for you.
Inpatient rehab facilities are all-inclusive, live-in treatment options. This means patients check-in to the facility and live there for a period of time to help the recovery process.
The rehab program at an inpatient facility usually involves a full schedule to keep patients occupied and give them tools they need to help beat addiction. This includes many different activities, including: individual and group therapy, physical exercise and activity, community groups, and educational instruction on how to live a sober, healthy lifestyle.
Outpatient rehab facilities offer similar tools and resources to recovery as inpatient rehab treatment. The main difference between the two options are that with an outpatient rehab treatment facility, the patients live at their own home and travel to the treatment center for specific meetings or activities.
While both options are good resources for recovery, they do each come with their pros and cons.

This list is to help remind you that there are different reasons for each person to choose their own path to recovery. What is right for one person may not be right for another. It is important to think about your life and what rehab option will be the most successful for you.
After completing detox and rehab, you will want to find other resources to help you continue on your recovery journey. Even if an addict completes rehab, that does not mean they are cured of the disease. This will be an ongoing struggle. But there is help along the way.

The negative effects that addiction and alcoholism have on your life harm not only you, but also the ones you love. Family and friends of current or recovering addicts or alcoholics need support as well.
There are resources and meetings available that allow spouses, children, friends, and parents to come together. They can share experiences and find strength to help their loved ones fight their battles with substance abuse.
The most prominent of these groups are Al Anon, Nar Anon, and Alateen.
Alateen is specifically for youth who are close to alcoholics. This group teaches the next generation on ways that they can break the cycle of addiction and take the steps they need to take now to ensure they live a happy, healthy, addiction-free life.
