Addiction can often feel like an isolating disease. Along with the crippling stigma attached to chronic substance abuse, there’s also the simple question of where to turn to for help.
In fact, a national survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that nearly 1 out of 5 addicts seeking out help didn’t receive it simply because they didn’t know where to go to find it.
And for many, it isn’t so much that there aren’t community resources available. It’s more that they just don’t know where to look to find them.
In Walla Walla, Washington, there are plenty of local addiction resources for anyone struggling with a substance use disorder. And this guide will take you through some of the most helpful.
From overdose help and community support groups to educational opportunities, needle exchange programs, and professional treatment options, this guide will show you where to find the support and healing you need to regain control over your substance abuse and your life.
One of the most serious risks of an alcohol or drug abuse problem is the higher risk of experiencing an overdose. This overload of toxicity in the body can cause lasting physical and mental damage in mild to moderate cases and seizures, comas, or even death in the worst.
What’s more, the rate of fatal overdoses is continually on the rise in the United States according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Since 1999, opioid overdose deaths have increased by five times. Deaths from cocaine alone have increased by 1.5-fold since 2010. And there has been an 8-fold increase in national overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines from 2002 to 2016.
Fatal overdoses in America have gotten so out of control that they’ve become the #1 cause of death among citizens under the age of 50.
It’s never been more important, then, to know how to quickly and effectively identify the signs of an overdose and understand the necessary steps to take to treat it.
Witnessing an overdose can be horrific in some cases. But more often than not, the victim presents more easily-overlooked symptoms, making it even less likely that they get the emergency care that they really need.
On top of that, different substances of abuse have different symptoms associated with an overdose, making the identification process even more confusing.
Being able to accurately spot the signs of an overdose, then, is absolutely critical.
Below are the symptoms of an overdose for some of the most commonly abused substances.
Heroin – In most cases, symptoms of a heroin overdose include:
AIRWAYS AND LUNGS
EYES, EARS, NOSE AND THROAT
HEART AND BLOOD
SKIN
STOMACH AND INTESTINES
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Prescription Opioids – Prescription opioid overdose can result in symptoms like:
Benzodiazepines – Some signs of an overdose on benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, etc.) include:
Alcohol – Some signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for include:
Crystal Meth – An overdose on crystal meth may cause the following symptoms:
Cocaine – Overdosing on cocaine can cause a number of symptoms, including:
Getting professional emergency help is absolutely essential in treating an overdose. Some people may be tempted to treat the overdose on their own by inducing vomiting for the victim, giving them coffee, or even forcing them to take a cold shower.
These are not overdose treatments. They are just wasting valuable time that could be spent contacting qualified emergency services. And in some cases, they may actually be making the damage even worse.
If you notice the signs of an overdose, then, it’s absolutely critical that you call 9-1-1 immediately. The emergency professionals here will be able to dispatch an ambulance to your location while also instructing you on how to ensure the best possible outcome.
They may, for instance, tell you to:
If you do have to leave the side of the victim (even for a minute) to call emergency services, it’s important that you place them in the recovery position first. This can help reduce the likelihood of choking while you’re away.
Once the ambulance has arrived, the medical professionals will be able to administer more in-depth care and may use overdose-reversing medications like naloxone to treat the victim. They will also likely transfer them to a local hospital or emergency room for more extensive treatment.
Without a doubt, some of the best sources for addiction recovery support are 12-step groups. Not only are these groups 100% free and usually entirely anonymous, but they're also incredibly common across the country, making it even easier to find a meeting nearby.
All 12-step groups have the same core principles at the heart of the recovery process. These principles make up the 12 steps. In general, these steps teach recovering addicts to ask for help with their addiction, live a life of rigorous honesty, and maintain complete sobriety.
Meetings usually follow a group talk format where individuals share their own personal experiences with the other members. They may recount parts of their lives and how addiction has had an impact on them, or they may share recent struggles they've had with triggers and relapse scares. It really depends on the individual group.
12-step groups also tend to incorporate a type of mentorship known as sponsorship. This consists of more experienced members helping newer ones through the steps and keeping them accountable along the way.
It’s worth noting that although some 12-step meetings have come under attack recently, these groups are in fact endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) as one of eight evidence-based behavioral therapies for treating addiction.
Some of the most notable 12-step groups are Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon.
First started in 1935 in Akron, Ohio, Alcoholics Anonymous or AA was the original 12-step group that started them all.
Since its founding, it’s grown to have nearly 2.1 million members and well over 120 thousand different individual groups around the world.
For many, Alcoholics Anonymous has become a vital force in their recovery and long-term sobriety. And for some, it may have even saved their lives.
Given just how popular AA is, it isn’t surprising that Walla Wall has a number of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings that take place throughout the week.

One of the best things about AA is that there are so many different groups to choose from. And if you don’t like anything about one group (time, location, general “mood”), you likely won’t have to travel far to find one that’s right for you.

Perhaps the second most well-known 12-step group, Narcotics Anonymous or NA was first founded in 1953. And like AA, it’s made up of small, independent and non-professional local groups of addicts trying to regain control in their lives.
However, one big difference between AA and NA is the fact that Alcoholics Anonymous only focuses on a single substance of abuse. Narcotics Anonymous, on the other hand, embraces addicts of all kinds, no matter the substance (including alcohol).
Despite not being quite as large as AA, there are still plenty of NA meetings within Washington State to choose from.
Walla Walla has a number of weekly NA meetings that take place across the city. And best of all, there are usually multiple meetings happening every single day. So even if you can’t make it to one, there are likely a few others that day that you can choose from.

It isn’t just the addicts themselves that suffer at the hands of substance abuse. Friends, family members, and even peers and coworkers can all end up being emotionally damaged along the way too.
Luckily, there are organizations like Al-Anon. Al-Anon uses the foundation of the 12 steps to focus on healing those around addicts who have suffered because of an individual’s substance abuse.
Meetings usually follow a similar group talk format, but the takeaways are more catered to the needs of friends and family. These groups can be helpful for eliminating enabling behaviors, spotting the signs of addiction in the first place, and so much more.
Fortunately, there are a number of Al-Anon groups that take place within Walla Walla itself. You can find the information for these groups listed below.

12-step meetings aren't for everyone. While they can be incredibly beneficial in providing a sense of community and social support for some, others may find the structure and "feel" of these meetings don't necessarily mesh well with their beliefs or their take on recovery.
One of the most commonly cited issues with 12-step groups is the "spirituality" associated with these meetings. Of the 12 steps, 7 of them make reference to a god or a higher power. And for individuals that don't believe in any sort of religion, this repeated mentioning of a spiritual being can be off-putting.
It’s worth mentioning here that all 12-step organizations publicly state that members of any spiritual beliefs are welcome to join. On top of that, atheists and agnostics alike do in fact regularly attend 12-step groups.
Others may simply believe that their path to recovery just doesn’t match up with that of 12-step programs. Maybe they prefer a more concrete approach or even a non-abstinence-based method for controlling their drinking.
And luckily, there are a number of 12-step group alternatives for problem users to attend in the Walla Walla area. Below are a few of the most notable.
SMART Recovery is a 12-step alternative that employs sensible, science-based tools for addiction recovery. Rather than the helplessness in the face of addiction of the 12-steps, SMART Recovery focuses on self-empowerment.
These face-to-face meetings follow a similar structure to groups like AA and NA many times but are instead led by a certified instructor rather than a community member. This ensures a consistent message to members with only approved recovery strategies each and every time.
On top of that, this organization is recognized by a number of reputable national health agencies like the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
While support groups and educational opportunities can be a vital part of any recovery process, many addicts will need more extensive care to overcome their substance abuse problems. And that’s where a professional treatment program comes in.
Professional addiction treatment connects addicts with expert services that have been proven to increase the likelihood of long-term sobriety and prevent relapse. On top of that, these programs can often make the process of recovery easier, safer, and much more comfortable.
A recovery program may also provide powerful medications and supplements for treating addiction. These might include buprenorphine, Vivitrol, Acamprosate, or certain benzodiazepines for reducing the severity of certain physical and mental symptoms.
In general, there are two main types of addiction treatment services: detoxification and rehabilitation.
Drug & Alcohol Detoxification – This is the very first step in the recovery process. Over the course of an addiction, the body makes a host physical changes to compensate for the continuous presence of the substance of abuse. Certain chemicals increase or decrease in potency, cell receptors grow and die off, and the body can only function normally when the drug’s in the system.
Once the addict quits that drug, the body has to readjust to living without it. And that means reversing (or compensating for) those physical changes. This process can cause a variety of uncomfortable and even dangerous symptoms known as withdrawals. Depending on the severity of the addiction, these withdrawals can be so intense that many addicts resort to using again just for relief from the discomfort.
A professional detoxification program can help guide recovering addicts through the detox process so that the intensity and duration of these withdrawals become much more manageable.
Nutrition-rich meal plans, proven behavioral therapies, specific medications, and more are all often a part of a professional detox program.
And most importantly, a professional program will also provide medical oversight throughout the process. This is an especially critical component since serious complications like malnutrition, dehydration, heart irregularities, and other problems are quite common. Plus, some withdrawal syndromes have directly life-threatening symptoms like tonic-clonic seizures.
Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation – While detoxification can be thought of as addressing the physical side of addiction, rehabilitation is more concerned with healing the mental side of it.
To explain, addiction is characterized as a brain disease because it causes physical changes in the way the brain operates. Areas of the brain that are critical for judgment, decision-making, learning, memory, and behavior control all appear physically different before and after addiction according to brain imaging studies.
As a result, the effects of addiction (like the compulsive drive to use again) can all linger long after detoxification is complete. And in fact, detox alone has been shown to be ineffective in achieving long-term sobriety without further care.
That’s where rehabilitation comes in. Rehabilitation helps recovering addicts find new, healthier ways of coping with life’s stresses and reinforces behaviors that can help prevent falling back into the cycle of addiction.
Most rehab programs will offer a variety of treatments such as one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapies that patients can continue to use long after graduating from the program.
And when combined with detoxification as well as a comprehensive aftercare program, rehab offers the absolute best odds at long-term sobriety.
Finding the right rehabilitation program for you can take some work and a fair amount of research. And one of the first things to be on the lookout for is the type of rehab program that meets your specific needs.
In general, there are three types of rehabilitation programs: inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).
Inpatient Rehab (~28 days) – An inpatient program is what most people imagine when they think of rehabilitation. Patients are required to stay on the property at all times. That means eating, sleeping, and attending treatment sessions all take place within the facility.
The more controlled environment helps insulate patients from the stresses of the outside world (allowing them to focus more on their recovery) while also preventing exposure to drugs or alcohol that might cause a relapse.
Inpatient programs are usually a bit more expensive due to the room and board costs, and most patients won't be able to attend work or school at the same time.
Outpatient Rehabilitation (~3 months) – An outpatient program is a much less intensive type of treatment, but it offers added flexibility. Instead of remaining on the facility property at all times, patients are free to go about their day as normal and attend treatment sessions in the evenings several times a week.
With this added flexibility, however, also comes a higher risk of relapse since patients are not protected from the temptations of the outside world.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (~3 months) – Also known as IOPs, an intensive outpatient program combines the care of inpatient with the flexibility of outpatient. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings just like outpatient, giving recovering addicts the ability to hold down a job or attend school at the same time of treatment.
However, these sessions are typically quite a bit longer in duration and may occur more frequently throughout the week. It’s a flexible way to offer a higher level of care that other programs simply can’t.
One of the biggest hurdles of getting addiction treatment is finding the right program to meet your specific needs. After all, just as addiction doesn’t affect everyone exactly the same, the means of recovery are going to vary from person to person as well.
As such, it’s critical that you know what to look for and what specific questions to ask when finding that perfect recovery program to meet your specific needs. Below are just a few important questions to consider asking each facility when seeking out the right program for you.
Do you offer support for co-occurring disorders?
What is your staff-to-patient ratio?
What kind of program do you offer (inpatient, outpatient, IOP)?
Do you offer detoxification services as well?
Do you provide aftercare referrals?
Are you nationally accredited?
Are you a holistic program? A medical one? A mix?
What kinds of insurance does your program work with?
One of the biggest mistakes that many recovering addicts make when finally getting treatment is not looking outside of where they live for recovery services. It’s true that having a facility nearby can be a huge benefit for some. After all, it can significantly cut down on travel time, which can be pretty important when it comes to outpatient facilities.
However, making the choice to travel outside for treatment services can actually end up being one of the best decisions a recovering addict can make. And that goes double for patients that need inpatient care. Below are just some of the benefits of choosing to travel outside of Walla Walla for treatment.
No one should have to suffer through addiction on their own. And thankfully, there are an enormous variety of addiction resources in Walla Walla for substance abusers to take advantage of. From overdose help and local support groups to community assistance and professional treatment options, there are plenty of places to go for addiction aid.
And when it does come time to seek out a professional program, Northpoint Washington in Edmonds is hands down one of the best options available. Our comfortable and modern inpatient facility provides the best drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in the state.
We are nationally accredited by the Joint Commission, have one of the highest staff-to-patient ratios in the area, and provide a fully comprehensive approach to recovery with a variety of activities and treatment options. Plus, each and every one of our patients receive individualized treatment plans based only on empirical evidence. And with a 24/7 nursing staff, we offer the care you need to recover quickly, safely, and successfully.
Sobriety is achievable – and we can help.
Our admissions coordinators are here to help you get started with treatment the right way. They'll verify your health insurance, help set up travel arrangements, and make sure your transition into treatment is smooth and hassle-free.
