The Dangers of Overdosing

An overdose is without a doubt one of the most terrifying outcomes of a substance use disorder.

Drug Overdose

Not only can they lead to lifelong problems like permanent organ and brain damage, but they can (and often do) also result in death.

In fact, the number of fatal overdoses in the United States is also on the rise. In 2017 alone more than 70 thousand Americans lost their lives to a drug overdose. That’s up 316% from 1999.

Drug overdoses have gotten so common today that they’re now the number one cause of death among Americans under 55 years old.

Today more than ever, then, it’s vital to know the signs of an overdose and what to do to treat one.

Not all overdoses look alike.

Below is a list of the most common signs of an overdose among the most widely abused drugs today.

Alcohol – Despite its legality and wide availability, alcohol is still quite dangerous – especially when consumed in excess. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Prescription Opioids – These drugs can be incredibly helpful in treating serious pain. But they’re also incredibly addictive and particularly dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Cocaine – A white, powdery stimulant, cocaine has long been one of the most recognizable illicit drugs. Some signs of an overdose on coke may include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Benzodiazepines – Drugs like Xanax and Ativan are both typically used to treat depression or anxiety. But recreational use of these drugs is also becoming more common. And they can be deadly too. Here are some benzo overdose signs to watch out for.

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

HeroinThis is perhaps the most notorious illicit drug on the market today. And part of the reason for that is because heroin is just as deadly as it is addictive. The signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Crystal Meth – A terrifying stimulant, crystal meth can lead to days-long binges that can wreak havoc on the body. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

An overdose is a serious medical problem that calls for serious medical care. As such, if you spot the signs of an overdose above, call 9-1-1 immediately.

If you are alone and have to leave the side of the victim for even a minute, be sure to put them into the recovery position. This simple yet effective step is one of the best ways to prevent a range of serious complications from occurring.

The operators on the other end of the line will send an ambulance to your location. In the meantime, they’ll likely ask a range of questions to get a better understanding of the situation. These questions may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What’s their current condition?
  • What drug caused the overdose and when was it last used?
  • Does the victim have a history of substance abuse?
  • Do they have a prescription for the drug?

Answering each of these questions honestly and accurately is key to ensuring the best possible outcome.

The operator may also tell you to administer CPR or perform other treatment measures like inducing vomiting. Try to follow the instructions as completely as you can.

Once the EMTs arrive, they’ll be able to take over treatment using specialized tools and overdose-reversing medications like naloxone. They’ll also likely transfer the victim to a hospital for more complete care.

Local Support Groups Near Arlington, Washington

Addiction is a serious disorder. Tortuous withdrawals, overpowering cravings, and unexpected triggers can all very easily lead to re-occurring relapses without the right kind of help.

That’s why it’s so important to build up a dedicated support network over the course of recovery. These networks can help keep recovering addicts motivated to stay sober and help prevent a full-blown relapse after a crisis event.

And one of the best places to find this kind of support is in a local support group. These groups are often free to attend, and many take place nearly every day of the week. Below are some of the best local support groups in the Arlington area.

The original 12-step group, Alcoholics Anonymous has been around since 1935. And since then, its membership has grown to more than 2.1 million across the world.

Arlington Alcoholics Anonymous

One of the best things about this group is the fact that meetings are usually incredibly easy to find. And on top of that, they are 100% free and value member anonymity – a key characteristic given the numerous stigmas attached to addiction.

Below are some of the closest AA groups around.

Narcotics Anonymous was one of the first offshoots of AA. It uses the 12-step model (which is endorsed by NIDA) to help treat substance addictions of all kinds – not just alcoholism.

However, meetings may not be as easy to find in some areas compared to AA. But luckily, there are still plenty of NA groups in and around Arlington. Below are some of the closest.

Alateen is a 12-step group made exclusively for young people. By surrounding members with young people just like them, they can finally open up to support and get the healing they need.

Not all programs are based on the 12- step model. And that can be welcome news for those who don’t necessarily prescribe to the same beliefs that this model endorses.

One of the best 12-step alternatives out there is SMART Recovery. These groups are built on empowering recovering addicts with evidence-based techniques and strategies founded in hard science. They’re also led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.

And luckily, there are quite a few SMART Recovery groups nearby.

Online Support Groups to Consider

But no matter the cause, there are still flexible options available that provide welcome support. And online support groups are some of the best.

These groups only require a smart device/computer and an internet connection to attend. And that means that recovering addicts can get the support they need no matter where they are.

Below is a list of online support groups to help you get started.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

While support alone is a vital part of a recovery program, it often doesn't provide the level of care necessary to quit an addictive substance altogether. This is especially true during the first few months of quitting.

That’s where professional treatment programs come in. These programs are designed to offer the necessary care and support required to give recovering addicts the absolute best chance at staying clean for good.

That’s because they use only evidence-based strategies and therapies that have been proven to help substance abusers recover in the long-term. And they offer the best chances at sobriety out of any recovery program.

In general, there are two main types of professional treatment programs: detoxification programs and rehabilitation programs.

Detoxification is the very first step of a professional program. That’s because it deals with the initial stage of quitting known as withdrawal.

Over the course of an addiction, the body becomes so accustomed to an addictive substance that it becomes unable to function normally without it. And once that substance is given up, the body has to re-adjust. This can often cause uncomfortable symptoms known as withdrawals.

Some of the most common withdrawals may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

These symptoms can be so problematic that many addicts tend to turn back to using just to get some form of relief.

A professional detox program does two things. First, it prevents relapse by treating these symptoms and making the process of withdrawal far more comfortable. And two, it prevents and treats serious complications, some of which can be life-threatening.

Rehabilitation is the second stage of a professional program. And while detoxification was more focused on the physical effects of addiction, rehab is more concerned with treating the mental ones.

It uses one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapies to help reverse compulsive drug-seeking behaviors and give patients the healthy life strategies they need to stay sober for good.

There are three different types of rehab programs too.

  • InpatientInpatient programs are also known as residential programs. Here patients are required to actually stay at a treatment facility throughout the program. And while this allows for a higher level of care, it can also be quite disruptive to normal daily activities.
  • Outpatient – An outpatient program is much more flexible than an inpatient one. Treatment sessions tend to take place in the evenings several times a week, allowing patients to spend their days and nights as they wish. But this freedom can also mean a higher risk of relapse for some.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – An IOP is an outpatient program where treatment sessions are longer and tend to occur more frequently throughout the week. It’s a step up from outpatient but still not quite as intensive as inpatient programs.

Although there are two addiction treatment centers in Arlington, they may not offer the level of care needed to kick an addiction to the curb for good. And for many residents, choosing to travel for treatment may end up being the far smarter option.

Deciding to travel opens up the door to plenty of other programs that can provide higher-quality services along with treatments that you may not be able to find nearby. In the end, the key to long-term success isn’t necessarily partnering with the closest facility, but rather partnering with the one that’s right for you.

But there are other benefits to leaving your hometown for treatment too. Below are just some of the best.

  • Helps solidify your commitment to recovery since its harder to quit
  • Lets you find facilities that have a better track record with your particular type of addiction
  • May offer you different medications that aren’t offered in nearby programs.
  • May help you find more comfortable amenities that can make recovery even easier
  • Offers more privacy and confidentiality since there’s less of a chance of running into someone you know.
