The Seattle Metro Area has seen a huge surge in substance abuse problems in the past several decades.
In fact, there were as many as 15 deaths per 100 thousand King County residents related to drug overdoses in 2014 – an all-time high. And within it, Wallingford is a northern neighborhood that has seen its fair share of problems too.
Unfortunately, many addicts who want to get help simply don’t know where to turn. One national survey found that as many as about 10.9% of addicts seeking help didn’t get it simply because they didn’t know where to look.
However, Wallingford is particularly lucky because it has so many different addiction resources to choose from. This complete guide covers some of the most important addiction resources in the area.
So, no matter how bad the problem has gotten, there are always resources out there to help keep addicts safe, supported, and sober.
There are so many negative impacts that a substance abuse problem can have on an individual. It can ravage finances, permanently damage vital organs, poison social relationships, and it can change the core aspects of how a person behaves.
But one of the most dangerous impacts is undoubtedly the risk of an overdose.
And now more than ever, overdoses have spiraled out of control in this country. Since 1999, drug overdoses have skyrocketed by 316%. In 2017 alone, more than 72 thousand Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses.
That’s why it’s so important to know how to spot the signs of an overdose early on and how to treat it effectively.
Identifying the symptoms of an overdose can be harder than some people think. To make it a bit easier though, below are some of the most notable signs of an overdose on some of the most commonly abused drugs today.
Alcohol – Each year, thousands of people die from alcohol poisoning. And part of the problem is that people around them aren’t able to recognize the signs until it’s too late. Here are some of the signs to watch out for:
Crystal Meth – A powerful and dangerous stimulant, meth is both addictive and destructive. Some signs of a meth overdose include:
Heroin – Without a doubt one of the deadliest illicit drugs, heroin is potent, addictive, and especially dangerous. Here are some common signs of an overdose on this drug.
AIRWAYS AND LUNGS
EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT
HEART AND BLOOD
SKIN
STOMACH AND INTESTINES
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Benzodiazepines – A type of prescription drug used to treat depression and anxiety, benzos like Xanax and Ativan are also deadly when not used properly. And when they’re used recreationally, the danger is even more real. These are some signs of a benzo overdose to watch out for.
Prescription Opioids – This category of drugs includes OxyContin, Vicodin, and Percocet. They’re usually used to treat pain. They’re also incredibly addictive. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids include:
Cocaine – Coke has been one of the most widely abused addictive substances for decades. It’s also one of the most dangerous drugs on the streets today. Some signs of an overdose on this drug could include:
Speed is key when treating an overdose. That’s why if you spot the signs above, you should call 9-1-1 immediately. The operators here will be able to tell you exactly what you need to do to help keep the victim alive. And on top of that, they’ll be able to send an ambulance to your location as well.
If you need to leave the victim’s side, place them in the recovery position to reduce the likelihood of any complications. Even if you only plan on being gone for less than a minute, this preventative measure can very easily end up saving a life.
The operators at 911 will also likely ask a range of questions such as:
The answers to these questions are key to helping the operator determine the proper next steps. So it’s incredibly important to answer each of their questions honestly and accurately. Holding back information such as whether an illicit drug was involved can end up costing a life.
They may also tell you to begin CPR or to perform other lifesaving actions. Be sure to follow their instructions exactly as best as you can.
Once the ambulance does arrive, the EMTs will take over and will likely start administering more comprehensive care. They may also use overdose-reversing medications like naloxone to improve the outcome.
In the end, acting quickly and answering honestly is key to helping the victim.
Many addicts unfortunately believe that they’re alone in their fight for sobriety. Maybe they think that others just won’t understand what they’re going through. Or perhaps they’re tied down by the numerous stigmas that surround substance abuse.
Whatever the reasons, many recovering addicts don’t get the support they need to recover. And that’s a shame, because there are so many different places to find it. Yet, so many end up returning to the same old cycle of addiction because they don’t have the right kind of support.
Thankfully, the Wallingford area has plenty of nearby local support groups to choose from. And each of these can be a vital force in keeping substance abusers on the road to recovery.
Below are some of the best support groups in the area.
Founded in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the oldest and most well-known support groups in the world. It’s built on the 12-step model which was first developed by AA itself.
These steps are designed to help recovering addicts live honestly and humbly in the face of their addiction. And in doing so, it can make their journey towards recovery much more successful.
12-step meetings are 100% free to attend, open to anyone, and are widely available all over the country – making it a great source of support for struggling addicts. And within Wallingford and its surrounding areas, there are plenty of meetings to choose from.
Below are some of the closest.

Like AA, Narcotics Anonymous is built from the 12-step model. But unlike Alcoholics Anonymous, NA opens up its doors to all types of addicts. That means heroin, crack, meth, and even alcohol addicts are welcome to attend.
Unlike AA, though, Narcotics Anonymous meetings aren’t quite as numerous and widespread as Alcoholics Anonymous. That being said, there are still plenty of local NA groups to choose from in the Wallingford area.

Alcoholism can be just as destructive for friends and family as it is for the alcoholics themselves. And that’s why Al-Anon can be such a vital force for keeping these victims supported and safe during their loved one’s struggle with addiction.
Al-Anon is another 12-step program geared towards helping those around an addict. Some popular topics that might be discussed here could include:
In the end, support can be just as necessary for friends and family as it is for the addict themselves. And there are a number of Al-Anon meetings in Wallingford nearby.

Many people who grow up in an alcoholic home can have lasting problems that continue on well into adulthood. And in fact, these problems are so consistent that there’s even a list of them.
Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is a 12-step program designed to help these individuals get the targeted help they need to stay healthy, happy, and supported.
And in the Wallingford, Seattle area, there are quite a few places to find meetings nearby.

Not all support has to come from 12-step groups. And in fact, there are some who find that the 12-step approach just doesn’t work for them. Luckily, there are still plenty of alternatives to check out.
SMART Recovery is one of the most popular of these alternatives. Its science-heavy approach to recovery gives members the proven, actionable techniques they can use today to help cope with cravings, avoid triggers, and stay sober.
SMART Recovery takes a non-spiritual approach to recovery too, which can be quite important to some.
There are quite a few SMART Recovery meetings happening in the Wallingford area. The closest are below.

Sometimes, an in-person meeting just isn’t going to work. Maybe it doesn’t mix with your schedule. Or maybe it’s too far away. Or maybe you don’t want to run the risk of bumping into someone you know since addiction is so stigmatized today.
No matter what the reason, there are still other support options not limited to face-to-face meetings.
Online support groups, for example, offer flexibility and anonymity on a whole different level. These groups can take place over email, chat groups, online forums, or even via video calls. It truly is the future of addiction support.
And while in-person groups are typically thought to be more effective in promoting recovery, there are quite a few online groups that can be quite helpful. Below are some of the best to check out.
Support can go a long way when it comes to recovery. And it’s true that without it, many people will have a hard time sticking to their recovery plan. But even still, it often isn’t enough to keep people sober all on its own.
In fact, the overwhelming majority of substance abusers will need a much higher level of care when it comes to their recovery. And that’s where professional addiction treatment programs come in.
The mission of these programs is to make recovery as comfortable, safe, and effective as possible. They use evidence-based treatments and strategies to ensure the absolute best chances of sobriety. And with the help of licensed nursing staff and physicians, they can both prevent and treat serious health complications that might occur along the way.
And on top of that, they offer a level of emotional and motivational support that most other programs simply can’t.
Ultimately, a professional program is the absolute best way of overcoming a substance use disorder.
And in general, they can be broken down into two different types of programs: detoxification and rehabilitation.
When the body becomes dependent on an addictive drug, it changes on a physical level.
Certain chemicals become stronger or weaker, cell receptors grow and die off, and the body tunes into a fundamentally different way of operating. In fact, it becomes unable to function normally on its own without the help of the addictive substance.
That’s why when an addict quits using a drug, they usually experience a range of uncomfortable physical and psychological symptoms known as withdrawals. Some examples of withdrawals include:
What a detoxification program does is it helps patients push through these withdrawals and keeps them from turning back to using. A professional program also can prevent and treat the many complications that can pop up during withdrawal, some of which can actually be life-threatening.
Once patients get through detox, they can move on to rehabilitation. But without the help of a professional program, resisting the cravings to start using again can often be more than most people can bear.
While detoxification is concerned with treating the physical side of addiction, rehabilitation is more focused on the mental side of it. And for many, this is where the real work begins.
Part of what makes addiction so difficult to get over is the fact that the brain becomes significantly altered over the course of a substance use disorder. In fact, according to NIDA, “Brain imaging studies from people addicted to drugs show physical changes in areas of the brain that are critical for judgment, decision-making, learning, memory, and behavior control.”
And these changes can make it difficult – if not impossible – for addicts to control their actions and abstain from using.
What rehab does is it attempts to fix these changes or give addicts the tools they need to cope with their effects. Therapies like one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and certain behavioral therapies are some of the ways rehabilitation programs do so.
There are two main types of rehabs: inpatient rehabs and outpatient ones. Each has its own pros and cons.
Inpatient – Patients eat, sleep, and receive treatment all in the same central location. Programs usually last around 30 days.
Outpatient – Patients attend treatment sessions in the evenings or on a flexible schedule. Programs usually last around 3 months.
Finding the right addiction facility to partner with can be tough. And that’s especially true here since Wallingford has over five different addiction facilities and treatment centers to choose from.
But no matter how close or how cheap a program is, the real goal is to find the program that’s right for you. Below are just a few questions to consider asking rehabilitation centers in your search. Because the more you know about a program, the better able you’ll be to see if it actually meets your specific needs.
As you can see, there are plenty of addiction resources in Wallingford, WA to help keep struggling addicts safe, supported, and sober. And when it does come time to partner with a professional facility, there are a couple of options to choose from.
However, picking a program shouldn’t just come down to cost and proximity. And in order to ensure the absolute best chances at a long-term recovery, it needs to be the right facility, not the cheapest or the closest.
And at Northpoint Washington, we’re proud to offer the absolute best in both drug rehabilitation and alcohol detox/rehab in the Pacific Northwest. Our comfortable and modern facility in Edmonds uses only individualized and empirically-based programs for each of our patients. And with one of the highest staff-to-patient ratios in the area, you can be sure you’re getting the level of care you deserve.
But Northpoint Washington isn’t right for everyone. And only a conversation with a qualified addiction expert can help you or your loved one find out which program is a good fit.
So get in touch right now to start your recovery today. Addiction doesn’t have to be a lifelong disease. And we’d love to help you achieve a life of sobriety.
Our admissions coordinators are here to help you get started with treatment the right way. They'll verify your health insurance, help set up travel arrangements, and make sure your transition into treatment is smooth and hassle-free.
