Addiction Resources in Pinehurst, WA

Pinehurst, Washington Overdose, Support, & Treatment Addiction Resources

Given its close proximity to Seattle, it isn’t any wonder that residents in Pinehurst are no strangers to drug addiction.

However, many people in this small Northern-Seattle community aren’t fully aware of the many addiction resources nearby. And unfortunately, that means that many addicts aren’t able to get the help they need to recover.

This guide to Pinehurst, WA addiction resources takes a closer look at the many sources of help and support in the area. From overdose help and local support groups to professional treatment programs, there are plenty of ways residents of this Washington town can stay safe, supported, and sober.

The Dangers of Overdosing

When it comes to addictive substances, one of the most dangerous side effects of abuse is the risk of an overdose. Not only can they lead to permanent, lifelong problems down the line, an overdose can also be directly life-threatening.

In fact, over 70 thousand Americans died from a drug overdose in 2017 alone. And when you combine that with the thousands of alcohol poisonings that occur every day, overdoses are actually one of the deadliest killers our country is facing today.

Some sources even point out that overdoses are the number one killer of Americans under the age of 50 – that’s more than guns, car accidents, and even certain kinds of cancers.

And worst of all, things are only getting worse with each passing year.

It’s never been more important than now, then, to know how to spot the signs of an overdose and to know what to do to help treat one.

Not all drugs have the same overdose symptoms. And in fact, spotting the signs early can be harder than most people think. Have a look below are some of the most widely abused drugs today along with their common overdose symptoms.

The quicker you can spot the signs, the faster you can get the lifesaving treatment they need.

Alcohol – Though this drug is legal, alcohol poisoning can be incredibly deadly. Some of the most notable signs of an alcohol overdose include:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Benzodiazepines – Benzos like Vicodin and Ativan are usually prescribed for mood disorders like depression and anxiety. But they are also used recreationally. Symptoms of a benzodiazepine overdose may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Cocaine – Incredibly addictive and widely abused, cocaine can also be quite deadly. Signs of an overdose may include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Crystal Meth – Crystal meth is a powerful stimulant and can cause a host of health problems for abusers. Overdoses can also be especially dangerous. Symptoms of a methamphetamine overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

HeroinOne of the most notorious drugs on the streets today, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Prescription Opioids – Painkillers like OxyContin and Vicodin are just a few of the main drivers of the opioid epidemic. And when they’re abused, they can easily lead to fatal complications. Some signs of an overdose include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Treating a drug or alcohol overdose requires fast action and complete honesty.

The first step is identifying the signs. After that, it’s all about contacting emergency services as quickly as possible. If you spot the symptoms of an overdose, call 9-1-1 immediately.

If you have to leave the side of the victim (even for a minute), be sure to put them into what’s known as the recovery position. This doesn’t take long to do and is instrumental in preventing life-threatening complications like choking.

The operator at 911 will likely ask for a range of information. Victim age, weight, and condition, types of substances taken, and whether or not they had a legitimate prescription are just a few examples.

It’s important to answer all of these questions accurately and honestly. Operators are only able to help if the information they get is true. And lying to them about, for example, if these drugs were illicit is only making it harder for them to save the life of the victim.

They may also ask you to administer CPR or take other treatment measures.

Once the ambulance arrives, the emergency personnel will then take over. They may end up using overdose-reversing medications like naloxone too.

An offshoot of AA, Narcotics Anonymous opens up the door to all types of addictions. As such, people suffering from abuse problems with heroin, cocaine, meth, alcohol, and any other drug are all welcome to attend.

While it isn’t as popular as Alcoholics Anonymous, NA still has plenty of different meetings in the Pinehurst area for residents to choose from. Below are some of the closest.

Alcoholics aren’t just hurting themselves when they continue to abuse alcohol over and over. Their friends, family members, and even coworkers might all be suffering along the way too. And for them, there’s Al-Anon.

Al-Anon is another 12-step group that focuses on those around an alcoholic rather than the alcoholic themselves. These groups offer support, guidance, and direction for those who so rarely get the help they need to stay happy and healthy despite their loved one’s alcoholism.

Below are just a few of the many Al-Anon groups taking place around Pinehurst.

An offshoot of Al-Anon, Alateen is specifically geared towards helping young people manage and cope with growing up around an alcoholic.

These groups are typically led by an adult, but members are made up of younger victims. By surrounding them with people their age, members are often much more open about their personal experiences and, thus, are able to get more out of these support groups.

Similar to Al-Anon, Nar-Anon is a family-oriented support group that follows the 12-step model. However, it doesn’t focus exclusively on alcoholism. Instead, members have loved ones that are addicted to a range of substances – from alcohol and marijuana to crack and heroin.

Nar-Anon groups aren’t quite as easy to locate as other 12-step groups. However, there are still plenty nearby to choose from.

Growing up in an alcoholic home can leave lasting scars on a person, both physically and mentally. And many times, the trauma experienced here can have long-term consequences that make it difficult to function normally and healthily, even after the victim becomes an adult.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is another 12-step group to consider. This group is specifically geared towards helping grown-up victims of alcoholism that have been traumatized by a loved one's alcohol abuse when they were children.

There are plenty of nearby ACoA meetings too. Below are some of the closest.

The 12-step approach doesn’t work for everyone. But even so, that doesn’t mean that it’s the only option.

SMART Recovery is one of the most popular and effective alternatives to the 12 steps. It uses the latest addiction research to inform members of actionable techniques and strategies they can use to stay sober. Meetings are led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.

SMART Recovery meetings are pretty widespread too. And in the Pinehurst area, there are quite a few to choose from.

Fitting these meetings into your schedule can be kind of tough. On top of that, not everyone has the means to travel to these different locations. And as a result, some people simply won’t be able to attend these in-person meetings.

However, that doesn’t mean they can’t get the support they so desperately need. That’s where online support groups come in. These support groups can take place in a variety of ways. They may be email-based, occur in real-time chat rooms, in online forums, or even can be held through Skype or video calling.

In the end, if you have a smart device/computer and an internet connection, you can still get the support you need. Below are a few great places to start.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

Support groups alone often aren’t enough to overcome an addiction permanently. Sometimes it works, sure. But in the overwhelming majority of cases, struggling addicts need a higher level of care.

And that’s where a professional treatment program comes in.

These programs are specifically designed to help recovering addicts develop the life strategies and coping mechanisms needed to kick their addiction to the curb and to stay sober in the long-term.

Programs are run by qualified physicians and addiction experts along with professional nursing staff to keep patients healthy and safe. They can also grant access to a range of powerful addiction medicines that can help reduce cravings and make withdrawals far more manageable.

Ultimately, a professional program provides the structure, expertise, and proven tools for combating addiction. And it’s far safer and more successful than trying to overcome an addiction alone.

In general, there are two different kinds of treatment programs: one’s that deal with detoxification and ones that deal with rehabilitation.

Sometimes these programs overlap, so they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. But in many cases, facilities decide to only focus on one.

So, what are these two types of treatments?

Detoxification – This is the first stage. And it may be the most uncomfortable. When an addict quits using a drug they’ve grown physically dependent on, their body is thrown into an extremely uncomfortable state called withdrawal. This is when the body begins to readjust to life without the addictive substance. And while it usually only takes a week or two, the symptoms can end up being incredibly uncomfortable.

For example, withdrawal from certain drugs can cause symptoms like:

  • Tremors
  • Feelings of electric shock
  • Hallucinations
  • Heart abnormalities
  • Depression, anxiety, irritability, paranoia
  • Psychosis
  • Nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps
  • …and much more

As you can see, detoxification can be hard to get through without the right kind of support. And in fact, many addicts aren’t able to push through these symptoms on their own without turning back to drugs just to get some relief.

A professional detoxification program is specifically focused on making this process as comfortable and safe as possible. And with the help of certain types of therapies, treatments, and medications, a professional program can go a long way in helping patients get through these symptoms in one piece.

Rehabilitation – This stage comes after detox and is often just as important (if not more so) for fostering long-term recovery. While detox is more concerned about the bodily side of addiction, rehab focuses on the mental side.

Weeks, months, and years of substance abuse has been shown to cause physical changes in the brain of an addict. And these changes can help explain the compulsive and self-destructive behaviors that addicts just can’t seem to get over on their own.

A rehab program teaches recovering addicts how to overcome these destructive impulses and replace them with healthier life strategies. Treatments like one-on-one counseling, group talk, and behavioral therapy are just a few ways rehab does so.

There are also three different types of programs too. Inpatient rehab requires patients to eat, sleep, and receive treatment all in the same location (highest level of care). Outpatient rehab allows patients to live out their day normally and come in for evening treatment sessions (lower level of care). And an intensive outpatient program (IOP) is like outpatient but sessions last longer and occur more frequently (middle level of care).

Each program type has its own pros and cons. And there is no perfect program that meets everyone’s unique needs. Talking with an addiction expert is the best way to find out which program is right for you.

There are a couple of options for addiction treatment around the Pinehurst area. Some of these are detox-focused while others deal more exclusively with rehab. And while there are nearby options to choose from, that doesn’t mean that these are the only choices for recovering addicts around Pinehurst.

In fact, deciding to travel for treatment can actually end up being far more beneficial in the long run compared to settling for a facility nearby.

That’s because travelling for an addiction program can come with a host of benefits, many of which can mean the difference between lifelong sobriety and a full-blown relapse. Below are some of the most notable benefits that show why leaving your hometown for treatment might be one of the best recovery choices you’ll ever make.

  • It can open up the door to programs with much higher-quality treatments.
  • It can connect you with better amenities.
  • It can help you take recovery far more seriously.
  • It can help you feel more confident about your recovery.
  • It lets you avoid people you know if you’re worried about the stigmas surrounding addiction.
  • It can be harder to quit since you are in an unfamiliar environment.
