While 12-step treatment and programs have been known to help recovering addicts abstain from drinking, they’re not for everyone. Some people simply don’t like the idea of having to rely on a higher being, these individuals may benefit more from attending science-based support groups like Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meetings. These support groups teach recovering addicts various recovery skills that may help them achieve sobriety.
SMART meetings follow a 4-point program. Common skills that members may learn include how to perform a cost/benefit analysis and how to practice Unconditional Self Acceptance (USA). These skills can help recovering substance abusers learn how to manage cravings and how to stay motivated while in recovery.
