Located within the Metro Seattle Area, Haller Lake is a small and beautiful community. But as with other areas in the pacific northwest, it’s no stranger to substance abuse either.
Unfortunately, many residents here don’t fully understand how many addiction resources are located right around the corner. And for some, not knowing where to turn for help can make it so much harder to quit, even when they want to so badly.
This guide to addiction resources in and around Haller Lake, Washington takes a deeper dive into these resources. What should you do in case of an overdose? Where can you find local support groups? And how do you know how to find the right professional treatment program?

The Dangers of Overdosing
Overdoses are on the rise across the country. And in many cases, these overdoses can be fatal.
In fact, the problem has gotten so out of hand that fatal overdoses are now the number one cause of death among Americans under the age of 50. And when you look at the numbers, it’s easy to see why.

A major part of the problem is the uptick in overdoses related to opioids like oxycodone, heroin, and fentanyl. But it isn’t just opioids that are responsible. ODs involving cocaine, benzodiazepines, and psychostimulants are all increasing year over year.
And one of the best ways to combat this deadly fallout is by educating yourself on the signs of an overdose and what to do to help treat one.
Not all drugs will have the same overdose symptoms. And learning how to spot these signs early can end up saving a life.
Below are some of the most common overdose symptoms for the most widely abused drugs today.
Prescription Opioids – These drugs are used to treat pain. But they are also highly addictive. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:
- Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
- Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
- Slow, shallow breathing
- Choking or gurgling sounds
- Limp body
- Pale, blue, or cold skin
Cocaine – One of the most popular recreational drugs, cocaine can be deadly when taken in large quantities. Some signs of an overdose on this drug could include:
- Seizures
- Loss of awareness of surroundings
- Loss of urine control
- High body temperature, severe sweating
- High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
- Bluish color of the skin
- Fast or difficulty breathing
- Death
Alcohol – Alcohol is without a doubt one of the most widely abused addictive substances in the world. And drinking too much of it can easily lead to a potentially fatal overdose. Here are some of the signs to watch out for:
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
- Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
- Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
- Low body temperature (hypothermia)
- Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened
Crystal Meth – A horrific drug, crystal meth is as potent as it is addictive. And taking too much of it can very easily lead to an overdose. Some signs of a meth overdose include:
- Agitation
- Chest pain
- Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
- Heart attack
- Irregular or stopped heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Very high body temperature
- Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
- Paranoia
- Seizures
- Severe stomach pain
- Stroke
Benzodiazepines – These drugs are usually prescribed for mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Some of the most common ones are Xanax and Ativan. But like other prescription drugs, these are also frequently abused for recreational purposes. Overdosing on them can also be quite dangerous. Below are some symptoms of a benzo overdose.
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Unresponsiveness
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
- Hallucinations
- Slurred speech
- Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
- Coma
- Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
- Weakness
- Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
- Poor memory
- Shallow breathing
- Low blood pressure
Heroin – Widely abused and particularly dangerous, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:
AIRWAYS AND LUNGS
- No breathing
- Shallow breathing
- Slow and difficult breathing
EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT
- Dry mouth
- Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
- Discolored tongue
HEART AND BLOOD
- Low blood pressure
- Weak pulse
SKIN
- Bluish-colored nails and lips
STOMACH AND INTESTINES
- Constipation
- Spasms of the stomach and intestines
NERVOUS SYSTEM
- Coma
- Delirium
- Disorientation
- Drowsiness
- Uncontrolled muscle movements
After identifying the signs of an overdose, the next step is to contact emergency services by calling 9-1-1 immediately. The operators on the other line will be able to walk you through life-saving measures you can take while also sending an ambulance to your location.
If you do have to leave the side of a victim that’s unconscious, be sure to place them in what’s known as the recovery position. This position can help cut down on the risk of certain complications, some of which can be fatal. And even if you’re only going to be gone for a minute, it can still save their life.
The operator may ask several questions in order to get a better feel for the situation. These may include:
- What is the age, sex, height, weight, and current condition of the victim?
- What drugs did they take and when did they last take them?
- Did they have a legitimate prescription for the drugs?
- Have they used drugs recreationally in the past?
It’s critical to answer all of these questions 100% honestly. The more accurate the information they have, the better able they’ll be to actually help the victim.
They may also ask you to administer CPR, induce vomiting, or perform other measures to help ensure the best outcome.
When the ambulance does arrive, the medical professionals will be able to provide more comprehensive care and may even provide overdose-reversing drugs like naloxone.
In the end, honesty with operators and early action on your part are key for making the best of this dangerous situation.

Addicts themselves aren’t the only ones that suffer because of a substance abuse problem. In fact, some of the harshest impacts are felt by those around a habitual alcohol user – people like friends, family members, and even coworkers.
For them, there’s Al-Anon. This group is built on the 12-step model, but it actually focuses on the people hurt by another’s substance abuse. These groups can offer guidance, emotional and motivational support, and insight into addiction as a whole.

While the previous meetings have all been 12-step groups, SMART Recovery offers an alternative model for recovery.
This group tries to focus more on the present day, giving members actionable strategies and techniques for fending off cravings and avoiding triggers. Plus, each lesson is grounded in the latest science in the field of addiction. Meetings are also led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.
There aren't as many SMART Recovery meetings as there are 12-step groups, but there are still plenty to choose from nearby.
